Surgical instrument set for joint resurfacement and treating SBCs in horses extraarticularly and from the joint surface

The „press-fit” technique through extraarticular approach, using autologous cylindrical cancellous bone graft transplantation

A single operation for harvesting the bone grafts from the tuber cocae or from the medial femoral trochlea and transplanting them to cure /eliminate the cysts.
The technique is suitable for bone cysts in young and adult horses regardless of the age or the location.

The cylindrical osteochondral grafts are harvested from a less weightbearing articular surface for filling subchondral bone cysts or replacing articular cartilage defects during the mosaic arthroplasty procedure.

Insertion of cylindrical cancellous bone autografts into SBCs are safe procedure due to the so called “press-fit” nature of insertion.

  • Easy operation due to custom developped tool-set
  • Transplanted grafts have uniquely osteoinductive, osteoconductive as well es osteogenic properties.
  • The procedure eliminates the fibrous internal lining of the cyst (responsible for producing inflammatory mediators) as well as decreases intraosseal pressure surrounding the lesion, by which reduces pain.

Tools List

  1. Inox toolbox
For storage, and to be used in the autoclave. The diameter marked on the toolbox shall correspond with the diameters marked on the individual tools.
  2. Tubular chisel
For harvesting osteochondral or cancellous grafts.
  3. Chisel tamp
Used as a “T” handler through the chisel during graft extraction.
  4. Chisel protection cup
Applied on the sharp side of the chisel during retrograde extraction of the graft from the chisel with the chisel tamp and hammer.
  5. Drill guide
Used during the drilling procedure of the recipient hole.
  6. Drill bit
Used to drill the recipient hole.
  7. Dilator
Used to dilate the drilled hole before graft insertion.
  8. Measuring sleeve
  9. Measuring tamp
Instruments No. 8. and 9. are used together to measure depth and cut the graft to the appropriate size.
  10. Graft insertion guide
The graft is inserted gently through this instrument into the recipient hole with the help of the dilator and a hammer.
